Solvents

DEFRA has issued a consultation paper (see ) regarding compliance, in the UK, with the provisions of the Solvent Emissions Directive 1999/13/EC. The UK is some two years behind schedule in implementing this directive within the relevant time limits. The consultation paper discusses the relevant implementation options and includes a set of draft regulations intended to apply to the following activities and installations: (1) dry cleaning; (2) some timber treatment processes; (3) some vegetable oil and fat purification processes; (4) solvent use/consumption; (5) some vehicle finishing/coating processes; (6) solvent cleaning processes using a minimum of one tonne of solvent per annum; and (7) formulation of pharmaceuticals producing 50 tonnes of product per annum.
